I don’t think what Culley said here was a good example of the failures of the “old school.” He doesn’t brush aside analytics, but says a coach has to have a feel for the game as well. (Examples off he top of my head: does the d-line look tired? Can I trust my kicker?) Many coaches may hide behind probabilities and percentages to justify tactical decisions. But if a head coach won’t trust his gut instinct in a particular situation based on awareness “on the ground,” maybe he shouldn’t be coaching. That’s not “old school,” it’s having the courage to make a decision.
